La brasserie fédérale Rothaus tirera à l’avenir son énergie de la biomasse. Un système complet développé par la société Bioenergie-Heidelberg en cours d’installation entrera en service en mai 2008. La brasserie sera alors entièrement chauffée à l’aide de déchets forestiers conditionnés en pelets issus de la Forêt Noire environnante. Pour ce brasseur allemand, dont l’unique actionnaire est l’état de Bade-Wutemberg, cette démarche s’inscrit dans une volonté déjà ancienne de préservation de la nature. Après la mise en service d’une centrale de retraitement d’eau, l’automatisation complète de la salle de brassage, utiliser une énergie à teneur réduite en CO² ne pouvait donc que suivre. Située dans une zone relativement préservée, à une bonne heure au sud-est de Fribourg, la brasserie la plus haute d’Allemagne s’élève au coeur d’une épaisse forêt de sapins, à 1 100 mètres d’altitude. L’endroit est réputé pour son air pur et son cadre idyllique.
